FRAN DE ANDA

ALCHEMICAL CREATURES

solo exhibition

July 13th - August 4th, 2024

Closing Reception: First Friday, August 2nd from 5-9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents ALCHEMICAL CREATURES by Fran de Anda – ten new portraits of celestial beings rendered in oil, gold and silver-leaf. Using traditional techniques to grind his own pigment, de Anda paints anthropomorphic soothsayers donning ancient religious garb, clothes that feel oddly fitting for the birds and bovine he represents. Set atop solid gold- or silver-leaf ground, these creatures safeguard the elements and meddle with time. Their large, staring eyes and simplified forms conjure early Byzantine iconography with an element of play; the freedom of magic and the prospect of joy.

“My inspiration is based on myths and archetypes such as life, death, nature, and the forces that act mysteriously in the world. I am interested in representing concepts like creation, fate, rain, fire, etc. through the alchemical symbolism of elements and the influence they cause on the viewer’s gaze. [I hope] that whoever looks at my work can find a little magic to accompany them on their journey to discover their place in this world.”

Fran de Anda lives and works in Mexico City. He studied Art and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and began exhibiting with Arch Enemy Arts in 2023. ALCHEMICAL CREATURES Is de Anda’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
