EMILY WHITE

ALPINE

solo exhibition

February 7th - March 2nd, 2025

Opening Reception: First Friday, February 7th, 2025

Arch Enemy Arts presents ALPINE, a rare series of intimate gallery paintings by Philadelphia artist and prolific muralist Emily White. Set in the creased folds of Earth’s gravity-defying peaks, yet elegantly painted on barren, black backgrounds, White depicts predator and prey relationships of the eponymous Alpine landscape with wildly convincing, naturalistic detail in striking, surreal compositions.

“For this series, I chose to depict a narrative that exists more through the juxtaposition of predator and prey, through the facial expressions and positions of the animals than through very detailed environments. I want the viewer to feel the feelings of these animals and the potential danger that is always lurking nearby. My goal is to spark conversations about our impact on the environment and to draw parallels between the natural world and the man-made. These pieces explore themes of coexistence and connection, blending storytelling with meticulous detail.”

It is as if time stands still in “Alpine,” and gravity is turned on its head. Whether in the impossibly fine fur of the Musk Deer as it twists into the jagged rocks of the Siberian Tiger’s cave, or the ninety degree flip of the Chamois on the back of the Lynx, White’s compositions underscore the emotional nature of these beasts, the codependence of their habitat, and the environment that lives within them. “Alpine” presents a majestic dance between art and nature, looking and seeing, giving and taking. White asks us to consider a natural world that most of us will never experience and question how our everyday actions may impact their existence.

Emily White studied sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She is a prolific muralist, creating large-scale public works throughout her hometown Philadelphia with the Mural Arts Program and through corporate commissions abroad. Emily has been showing with Arch Enemy Arts since submitting to our 2020 Spotlight Showcase, and “Alpine” is her third collection created for the gallery and our collectors.
