RICHARD AHNERT

CAUGHT

November 23rd, 2024 - January 5th, 2025

Closing Reception: First Friday, January 3rd, 2025

Arch Enemy Arts presents CAUGHT by Richard Ahnert, six charming paintings of naughty little animals immersed in domestic settings and engaged in human activities. A cat lounges puffing his morning smoke; a bear spies on her neighbors. Two weasels savor a bowl of cheese puffs, and a racoon reaches for breakfast.

Painterly yet naturalistic, Ahnert’s style, color palette, and evocative lighting work to set a mood. He transforms these playfully mischievous subjects into intimate and emotional narratives that seek to explore the human condition. Their rascally tendencies remind us who we are, and how we seem to others.

“The animals in these works are not merely anthropomorphized for humor. They are reflections of our daily rituals, our habits, and even our vices. By depicting them ‘caught’ in these seemingly mundane, yet deeply human activities, I aim to provoke questions about our own behaviors and even sin-like habits, and reflect upon how we may appear to an outsider or to another species.”

Richard Ahnert studied Illustration and Graphic Design at York University and Seneca College. His work is exhibited and collected around the world, and it has been heavily featured in print and digital publications. Ahnert began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2017. CAUGHT is his second solo feature with the gallery.
