WILEY WALLACE

CLOUDED

September 6th - 29th, 2024

Opening Reception: First Friday, September 6th from 5pm - 9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents CLOUDED by Wiley Wallace, nine gorgeous and intimate paintings set in the expansive landscape of the American Southwest. It is a wonder how massive these compositions feel in such tiny forms; the paintings in CLOUDED range from five to fourteen inches, but they feel enormous in both concept and scale.

Each piece depicts a child carrying a jar like an offering, brought before clouds that tower like monsters, terrifying and beautiful. The fragile magic of these jars match the preciousness of their protectors and unleash a world of endless interpretation. Meanings shift like clouds overhead as colors bounce and distort their reflections. Adding to this element of surprise, Wiley brilliantly paints the cradle-edged panels with integral elements of each composition. Incomprehensibly detailed textures and forms wrap around the sides, as if trying to protect what remains unseen. For us, the work signals the great burden of youth as our beacon of hope and the ominous implication that we are all storm-chasers today.

Born and raised in Arizona, Wiley Wallace studied at Arizona State University and obtained an MFA from University of California, Santa Barbara. He currently works as a professor at South Mountain Community College. Wiley began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2017, and we are ecstatic to welcome CLOUDED, his second solo feature with the gallery.
