BABS WEBB
COMFORT CREATURE
mini feature
March 23rd - April 14th, 2024
Opening Reception: First Friday, April 5th from 5-9pm
Arch Enemy Arts presents COMFORT CREATURE, a mini collection of seven intimately scaled and gorgeously rendered framed works by dark surrealist Babs Webb. To make her drawings, Babs uses powdered graphite mixed with alcohol to apply the medium to paper, a technique that creates cloud-like textures and soft gradients for an atmospheric haunting that is oddly calm. As if in a trance, her characters approach like familiar ghosts, unapologetically present and self-aware; her landscapes offer a peaceful allure in their darkness. In this way, Babs’ objects of fear underscore the great paradox of the horror genre–that we always come back for more.
“My work has always veered towards the macabre, but I wanted to convey something more quiet and subdued. I’m not a huge fan of gore or loud bright colors. I want my pieces to creep up on you slowly and unwind from there. Some people find it unsettling, others find it comforting, and I find that dynamic very interesting.” - Babs Webb
Babs Webb is based in Denver, Colorado and has a background in commercial illustration. She graduated from Pratt Institute with degrees in communication and graphic design. Babs has been showing with Arch Enemy Arts since 2020, and COMFORT CREATURE marks her first solo collection with the gallery.
