ALEXIS TRICE

DUST & BRINE

October 4th - 27th, 2024

Opening Reception: First Friday, October 4th from 5pm - 9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents DUST & BRINE, a solo debut by Alexis Trice. Ten oil paintings, including one large diptych, plus twenty preciously painted natural scallop shells inside wire plate hangers for discreet and effortless installation. Alexis’ work is deeply inspired by the sea and the emotional undercurrents it represents. Her paintings are involved and atmospheric. Tender strokes ripple across her inhabited landscapes, moving and glowing like layered reflections of light. Ethereal and difficult to describe, Alexis distinguishes her work with earthen hues, moody symbols, and complex explorations of soul.

“The water in this show is about energy and its transference on both an emotional and molecular level; emotions spanning from euphoria to shared fears and trauma, and even to glimpses of hope, the releasing and recycling of this energy and the impact it creates as it ripples outward. I wanted to make work that could be felt without fully being seen. I no longer cared about “the rules” in terms of painting a variety of subjects, and I felt the freedom to explore whatever or whoever I was currently fixated on. I am grateful to those creatures, so dear to me as the ones who deliver my message and help me deliver their’s.”

Alexis writes that dogs, a recurrent symbol in her work, “represent the ideal conduit to bridge the gap of shared emotion between wild animals and humans,” while candles, water, and pearls illustrate the passage of time. DUST & BRINE is a triumph, not only for the sheer scale and beauty of the collection but also for the challenges Alexis encountered while creating it: “My studio’s ceiling collapsed during the final lap of completing this work. It was extremely disruptive and caused major delays, damage and stress. Part of the show title ‘Dust’ was inspired by the sediment that engulfed all of my paint, supplies, and cherished belongings during this time.”

Alexis Trice is a native New Yorker. She studied Illustration at The School of Visual Arts and has exhibited her work around the world. A staunch advocate for the natural world, she volunteers at the American Museum of Natural History and assists in biology field work in the Amazon. After submitting to our 2022 Spotlight Showcase, Alexis has participated in more than ten group shows with Arch Enemy Arts, and we are excited to welcome her at the opening of DUST & BRINE on First Friday, October 4th. The show will be on view in our main gallery through October 27th.
