FLORAL BONES

debut solo exhibition

August 24th - September 15th, 2024

Opening Reception: First Friday, September 6th from 5pm - 9pm

Arch Enemy Arts presents FLORAL BONES, a collection of eight painted illustrations by Mary Esther Muñoz. Dark and romantic, Mary’s work combines soft, seductive forms with macabre themes for a moody aesthetic that is accentuated inside Victorian frames.

“I am heavily inspired by shrines and rib cages, and I love drawing mushrooms, stomachs and skeletons. This series is a way to combine these loves into dark enshrinements that pay homage to cyclical themes of growth, body image, and self-worth. Navels, mushrooms, and certain flowers symbolize rebirth and resilience; it is a healing process to arrange symbolic foliage within the torso or skeleton while also accepting that it will all ultimately be reclaimed by nature.”

In these images, the body breaks free from its corset of skin, breathing new life to seed and spore. Like rich soil, Mary’s alluring forms are emotional and flourishing, while simultaneously making way for the transformation of death and decay.

Mary Esther Muñoz is based in California and currently lives in the Sacramento area. She studied Art History at UC Santa Barbara and has worked as a professional artist and illustrator for nearly ten years. Mary began showing with Arch Enemy Arts in 2023, and FLORAL BONES is her first solo feature with the gallery.
