Arch Enemy Arts presents THE GHOST LIGHTS: Volume II by Juliet Schreckinger; the artist’s second body of work reimagining the world’s forgotten lighthouses as glimmering haunts of extinct animals. For this installment, Juliet pairs ten drawings with sixteen charming “Bird Captains,” all intricately stippled in archival ink and finished with layers of atmospheric graphite. Whimsical, precise, and full of joy, the series creates a metaphorical bridge between lost relics of human invention and the beloved ancestors of our natural world. 

 

“The inspiration for this multi-part series came when I joined the United States Lighthouse Society and got my first lighthouse passport book. Each participating lighthouse has a stamp that you can put in your passport book to mark that you have visited that light. It became a completely enthralling hobby. One day, I saw that the Lighthouse Society was offering a pack called “The Lost Lights,” and the name really drew me in. I read about how the Society made this collection of stamps based on lighthouses that had either fallen or been destroyed. Many of these lighthouses have become seabird nesting areas and home to sea lions and other animals, which made me think about what inspires me most of all–the protection of the creatures within our world. I rapidly saw the parallel between these lost lights and so many beloved animals. They are gone–permanantly–yet the ghost of these things, the memory, lives on, inspiring us to do better and to protect those that are still here.” - Juliet Schreckinger

 

Juliet Schreckinger is based out of Amityville, New York; living and growing up on coastal Long Island informs her work immeasurably. She earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, studying under Steven Brodner and Travis Louie, a close mentor of hers to this day. She writes, “My passion for animals makes me do all of this, and art is the best language I have. It has given me purpose and allows me to fight for the things I care most about. The care comes from a deep part of my heart, and without my art to express this love of nature, I would be lost.”

 

THE GHOST LIGHTS II is Schreckinger’s third solo exhibition in as many years with the gallery.
